What Has Your Attention Been Teaching You This Week?

"Sometimes the greatest insight isn't found in doing more... but in noticing more."

As another week comes to a close, I wonder...

Where did your attention go?

Not your time.

Your attention.

They're not the same.

Time keeps moving whether we choose it or not.

Attention is something we invest.

Every conversation.

Every meeting.

Every email.

Every notification.

Every worry.

Every act of kindness.

Every quiet moment.

Every one asks something of our brains.

This week, we've reflected on something surprisingly simple.

We've thought about the extraordinary things our bodies quietly do every day.

A yawn.

A blink.

Our ability to pay attention!

At first glance, they seem completely unrelated.

Yet they've all been pointing us towards the same truth.

Gratitude changes what we notice.

And what we notice begins to change how we live.

For many years after the brain aneurysm,

attention, remembering and even following through

became things I could no longer take for granted.

I knew what mattered.

I wanted to focus on it.

I wanted to remember.

But I discovered that wanting wasn't always enough.

I couldn't simply try harder.

I had to learn to reduce unnecessary cognitive load,

create practical supports and become more intentional

about where my attention returned.

That journey continues today!

Not because I've mastered it.

But because I've experienced how powerful small,

intentional changes can be.

Perhaps that's why this week's reflections have felt so personal.

Because every one of them has reminded me

that brain health isn't only about protecting our brains.

It's about learning to use the abilities we have with greater intention.

This week, one sentence has stayed with me.

Everything I pay attention to costs me something, so I choose to invest it in the moments, people and work that matter most.

I've realised that the quality of my week isn't simply determined by how busy I was.

It's shaped by what received my attention.

Because attention is never neutral.

It quietly shapes our relationships.

Our work.

Our memories.

Our wellbeing.

Our leadership.

And ultimately...

The lives we're building.

Time to Reflect:

As you enjoy the weekend, perhaps spend a few quiet moments reflecting...

  • What captured most of my attention this week?

  • Was it worthy of the investment?

  • When did I feel most present?

  • What one distraction am I ready to let go of?

  • What deserves more of my attention next week?

And perhaps one final question...

If my attention reflects what I value... What did my attention reveal about this week? — Annabel Aaron

So, before your weekend comes to an end...

Take just one minute.

  • Write down three things that deserve your attention next week.

  • Not everything.

  • Just the three that matter most.

  • Place them somewhere you'll see them from now

    until Monday morning.

You're not just writing a list.

You're reducing the cognitive load on your brain.

You're giving your future self one less thing to remember.

You're creating continuity between this week and the next.

Sometimes, the smallest intentional action today

can make next week feel very different.

I choose to notice what matters.

I choose to invest my attention wisely.

I choose to protect the moments, people and work that matter most.

With Gratitude

Annabel
