What is Your Attention Costing You?

Have you ever reached the end of the day and wondered where your attention went?

You started with good intentions.

But somewhere between the emails…

The notifications…

The meetings…

The conversations…

And everything else demanding your attention…

You found yourself reacting rather than choosing.

If that sounds familiar…

You’re not alone.

It certainly was for me,

After my brain aneurysm, one of the biggest challenges I faced wasn’t a lack of motivation.

It was attention.

I knew what mattered.

I wanted to follow through.

But keeping my attention on the right thing and keeping it there,

often felt far more difficult than it had before.

That experience taught me something I hadn’t appreciated before.

Attention isn’t just something we have.

It’s something we invest.

And every investment comes at a cost.

Whether you’ve had a brain injury, you’re rebuilding after an illness, living with ADHD, raising a family, leading a team, studying, caring for someone you love, or simply trying to keep up with the demands of everyday life…

Your attention is one of your most valuable resources.

It shapes what you notice.

What you remember.

What you focus on.

The decisions you make.

The relationships you build.

The work you produce.

And ultimately…

The life you experience.

The question isn’t whether you’re paying attention.

The question is:

What are you paying attention to?

Because everything you pay attention to costs you something.

And like every investment, not every return is worthwhile.

I’ve learned that brain health isn’t about becoming perfect.

It’s about becoming more intentional.

Some days I still need to pause.

Some days I still need to reduce distractions.

Some days I still need to return my attention to what matters.

That’s why today’s gratitude feels so personal.

I am grateful that I can pay attention…

…because everything I pay attention to costs me something, so I choose to invest it in the moments, people and work that matter most.

Every day is another opportunity to make that choice.

Not perfectly.

But intentionally.

Because small, repeated choices shape the way we think, work, love and lead.

If my journey has taught me anything, it’s this:

We don’t have to do this alone.

With understanding, practical strategies and the right support, we can strengthen these skills over time.

That is why I care so deeply about brain health, executive function, Collaborative Cognitive Continuity (C3) and Follow It Through (FIT), not because I mastered them overnight, but because I’ve experienced how much they can change everyday life.

IChoose:

#IChoose to notice what matters

#IChoose to invest my attention wisely

#IChoose to protect my moments and the people and work that matters most!

Reflection:

Today, ask yourself:

  • Where did my attention go?

And more importantly…

  • Did it go where my heart wanted it to… or simply where the interruptions led it?

I look forward to hearing from you,

With Gratitude
