Are You Investing Your Attention Wisely?

Can I ask you a question?

Where has your attention been today?

Not your time...

Your attention?

Have you ever stopped to think about why we say “pay attention”?

Not give attention.

Not have attention.

Pay attention.

We use the language of payment because,

whether we realise it or not, our attention has value.

Every moment you spend paying attention to one thing

means you’re unable to pay attention to something else.

Your attention is one of the most valuable investments you make each day.

Every investment comes with a choice.

I didn’t fully appreciate this until recently.

Like many of us, I’ve caught myself

scrolling through my phone while someone I love is talking.

I’ve found myself physically present but mentally somewhere else.

I’ve reached the end of a conversation

only to realise I hadn’t really heard it.

Not because I didn’t care.

But because my attention had quietly drifted.

It made me wonder…

How many meaningful moments have I almost missed

because my attention was somewhere else?

Here’s what I’ve realised.

A distraction isn’t simply something that captures your attention.

A distraction is anything that keeps your attention

from the people, places and moments that matter most.

That might be your phone.

It might be your worries.

It might be tomorrow’s to-do list.

It might even be your own thoughts.

None of these things are wrong.

But they all come at a cost

if they keep us from fully experiencing the life unfolding right in front of us.

One of the greatest thieves of our attention is the phone in our hand!

The danger isn’t simply that it takes up our time.

The danger is that it quietly steals moments we’ll never get back.

A child’s story.

A friend’s laughter.

A beautiful sunset.

A conversation that deserved more than half our attention!

The little moments often become the memories we treasure most.

The beautiful thing is this…

We don’t have to be perfect.

Our attention will wander.

Life is busy.

Our minds drift.

What matters is that we notice!

Every time we notice,

we have another opportunity to be fully present.

And every moment we give our full attention

becomes a memory we get to keep.

So today, I have one question for you.

What deserves your full attention today?

Maybe it’s a conversation.

Maybe it’s your child.

Maybe it’s your work.

Maybe it’s your health.

Maybe it’s simply this moment.

Whatever it is…

Be there.

Be fully there!

Be fully present!

Because the life we long for isn’t usually found in extraordinary moments.

It’s found in ordinary moments that receive our full attention.

Today #IChoose

#IChoose to invest my attention wisely.

#IChoose to notice when I’m not fully present.

#IChoose to be fully present with the people and moments that matter most.

Because every moment I give my full attention to becomes a memory I get to keep.

If You Remember One Thing From This Write Up… Remember This…

Every moment you give your full attention becomes a memory you get to keep.

With Gratitude,

Your Friend and Coach,
