I Am Grateful for Continually Learning My Limits

Have you ever committed to something with the very best intentions...
only to discover later that your time, energy, attention, or capacity couldn't fully support it?
I have.
In fact, one thing I am continually learning is this:
My capacity changes.
My circumstances change.
My responsibilities change.
This means learning my limits is not a destination.
It is an ongoing practice.
For a long time, I believed strength meant pushing through.
Doing more.
Taking on more.
Saying yes more.
Trying harder.
If I'm honest, there are still days when I slip into that mindset.
Days when I overestimate what I can carry.
Days when I underestimate what something will require.
Days when my enthusiasm and my capacity are not fully aligned.
But over time, I have learned something important:
Ignoring my limits doesn't remove them.
It simply delays the moment when I have to deal with them.
That lesson became especially important after my brain injury.
Not because I stopped wanting to achieve things.
Not because my goals disappeared.
But because I began to understand that wanting something and having the capacity for it in that moment are not always the same thing.
My limits are not evidence that I am incapable.
They are information.
Information that helps me make wiser decisions.
Information that helps me recognise when I need support.
Information that helps me recognise when I need rest.
Information that helps me understand what I can realistically;
carry,
commit to, and
follow through on.
One of the greatest misconceptions about growth is that maturity means having all the answers.
I no longer believe that!
I believe maturity is becoming increasingly honest about reality.
What I can carry.
What I cannot.
What needs adjusting.
What needs support.
And what needs to wait.
The more aware I become of my limits,
the better I become at making promises I can realistically keep.
To myself.
To others.
And strangely, that often helps me move further, not less.
Because sustainable progress is rarely built by ignoring reality.
I believe it is built by understanding it and responding wisely to it.
So today, I am grateful.
Not because I have mastered this lesson.
Not because I have arrived.
But because I am becoming more aware of it.
And awareness is often where meaningful change begins.
It is this that I share with my clients
and that alone relieves the pressure that they at times don't realise they are carrying.
