Your Brain Matters More Than Your Goals!

We live in a world obsessed with outcomes…!!
More productivity, more discipline, more achievement.
Then… new planners. New systems… AND new pressure!!!
Yet, rarely is thought given to the organ that allows us to carry out productive, discipline and planned actions/activities. The truth is this!...No goal survives on a dysregulated brain. By this I am referring to recognising when your brain is overwhelmed, overstimulated, or constantly in survival mode.
It really doesn’t matter how motivated you are. I am a queen of motivation, particularly after an awesome message at OCC (my Church), going to a conference or even hanging out with my friendship circle. What I have found is just how fragile focus is, how decisions can feel heavy and how our confidence wobbles under pressure or unfamiliarity and consistency disappears!!!
Yet, instead of supporting the brain, the organ that is set up to house our thoughts, feeling, actions, whether we follow-though on a commitment and also defines who we say we are...we blame ourselves!!!!
I know this personally. I blamed myself for things I could not even control!!!!
There was a season where my brain felt like it was working against me. Not because I lacked ambition or intelligence, but because my brain needed support, not criticism. What looked like procrastination was actually cognitive overload! What felt like failure was really exhaustion!!!
This is not an excuse.
Your brain is not the problem.
It’s actually your starting point.
What are you blaming yourself for?
Focus, motivation, planning, emotional regulation are all brain functions, not personality traits. And when the brain is under pressure, it prioritises survival over performance every single time!
That’s why burnout isn’t a character flaw.
It’s a brain issue.
So before you set goals, ask a better question:
Is my brain supported enough to carry what I’m asking and expecting from it?
Here are 3 things you can do right now to support your brain:
1️⃣ Reduce cognitive load (today).
Write down everything that’s circling in your head: tasks, worries, reminders etc. Your brain wasn’t designed to store everything. Offloading creates instant mental relief.
2️⃣ Create one non-negotiable pause.
Even 5–10 minutes of stillness, walking, or deep breathing tells your nervous system: you’re safe. Regulation begins with pause, not productivity. Set a definite time every day where you start by hearing and feeling yourself breathe.
3️⃣ Choose rhythm over pressure.
Ask yourself: What is sustainable today? Does not have to be perfect (Annabel read that again!!!!). Does not have to be impressive. Just make whatever 'it' is sustainable. Consistency grows from kindness, not force.
When you begin with the brain, the rest, rhythm, recovery, regulation that you need can change.
Clarity arrives/returns. Energy stabilises. Confidence rebuilds. Goals stop feeling heavy burdens and they can start to feel possible/achievable again.
Your brain isn’t broken.
It really, really isn’t.
It’s waiting.
Waiting for you to show up differently!
Waiting for support instead of self-judgement!
Waiting for a rhythm that works with it, not against it!
You are not alone!!
With gratitude,
Annabel
